Leadership

John C. Heun, Director

As the Executive Director and a 2017 alumnus, my passion is guiding the Talbot House team to provide life-changing hope through Louisville’s only true three-phase recovery program. Before leading this mission, I served at The Brook Hospital—KMI, earning my TCADC and APSS certifications to support others in their sobriety.

A proud Trinity and EKU graduate, I was born and raised in Louisville. Today, I am dedicated to a healthy lifestyle rooted in family, fitness, and a vibrant spiritual life. I remain deeply grateful for the alignment of mind, body, and spirit in everything we achieve here.

Our History

One Man’s Vision to a Proven Path

In 1963, Bill Wallace saw a broken cycle: men were jailed for alcohol-related charges, only to be released back into the environments that fueled their addiction. Determined to "bend the arc," Wallace began taking men from the courts into his own custody. While his initial "AA or Jail" ultimatum saw little success, he realized the missing link: stable, supervised community.

Alongside twelve AA members, Wallace secured a loan to convert his own home into a recovery sanctuary. Today, that mission has evolved into a three-stage system of tiered support:

  • Talbot House: High-structure entry point.

  • Wallace House: Transitional support with growing independence.

  • Jim Hoard House: The final step toward self-sufficient living.

Decades later, we remain anchored in Wallace’s founding pillars: recovery, accountability, community, and service.
