Louisvilles Only 3-Stage Recovery House

Giving Men Hope, Since 1963.

By the end of the program, you’re not just sober—you’re prepared.

Addiction is a complex disease that affects not only the individual but also families, relationships, and entire communities. While the journey to recovery can feel overwhelming, hope is always possible, and with the right support, lasting change can begin. The following video provides a better understanding of addiction and recovery before introducing how Talbot House has been helping men rebuild their lives since 1963.

To provide a safe, positive, structured, and accountable living environment for men seeking sobriety from alcohol and drug dependency. To help encourage men to learn how to live a substance-free, productive and meaningful lifestyle.

Talbot House is the only true 3-phase transitional recovery organization in the Louisville area, and it comprises 3 different houses. These are all located within a block of each other in Old Louisville.

After 90 days of compliance at the Talbot House, residents are eligible to transition to our Wallace House. Residents of the Wallace House are held to the same rules and expectations. After 6 months of compliance with the Wallace House, residents are eligible to move into our Hoard House. This is the final phase where residents can live in their own efficiency apartment for up to one year. Residents pay monthly rent and LG&E. Residents of the Hoard House must remain sober and stay compliant during their stay.

Transitional recovery housing at Talbot House is a safe, structured, healthy, family-like opportunity to live in a substance-free environment that supports men in recovery from alcohol and addiction. Transitional recovery housing provides a substance-free lifestyle, structure, and direct link to other peers in recovery, support groups and recovery support services.

Our Mission

Houses

Men begin their stay at The Talbot House, the original facility where the tradition of recovery began in 1964.

Talbot House is home to 18 men who live in two-, three- or four-man rooms. Depending on availability of rooms in Wallace House, men can expect to stay in Talbot House about two months. While living in Talbot House men receive close supervision, which is of great benefit to the newcomer. Talbot House is the center of activity for 12 Step and Community meetings. The staff office is also located in Talbot House.

Who We Are

Leadership

John C. Heun, Director

As the Executive Director and a 2017 alumnus, my passion is guiding the Talbot House team to provide life-changing hope through Louisville’s only true three-phase recovery system. Before leading this mission, I served at The Brook Hospital—KMI, earning my TCADC and APSS certifications to support others in their sobriety.

A proud Trinity and EKU graduate, I was born and raised in Louisville. Today, I am dedicated to a healthy lifestyle rooted in family, fitness, and a vibrant spiritual life. I remain deeply grateful for the alignment of mind, body, and spirit in everything we achieve here.

The Talbot Legacy: From One Man’s Vision to a Proven Path

In 1963, Bill Wallace saw a broken cycle: men were jailed for alcohol-related charges, only to be released back into the environments that fueled their addiction. Determined to "bend the arc," Wallace began taking men from the courts into his own custody. While his initial "AA or Jail" ultimatum saw little success, he realized the missing link: stable, supervised community.

Alongside twelve AA members, Wallace secured a loan to convert his own home into a recovery sanctuary. Today, that mission has evolved into a three-stage system of tiered support:

  • Talbot House: High-structure entry point.

  • Wallace House: Transitional support with growing independence.

  • Jim Hoard House: The final step toward self-sufficient living.
